The trick to DE (diatomaceous earth) filters is to size them right the first time! Here's one time where "bigger is better".  Bigger meaning filter size, not horsepower. 

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters provide the finest filtration by almost "polishing" your pool water.  DE filters filter down to about 3 to 5 microns in size (you can fit about 50 microns on the head of a pin).  That means you can filter out all kinds of dirt, pollen, algae, even larger sizes of certain bacteria!

The Hayward® Perflex® Extended-Cycle DE Filter EC 40 or EC 50 Systems with their 40 & 50 gallons per minute of filter capability & a 1.0 HP pump system is perfectly sized for your particular (EC 40 system typically a 15, 18, 21 round or 12x24 or 15x24 oval; EC 50 typically 24 round or large or 15x30 oval or larger).  Although the filter has the "capacity" to filter much more than that, you don't want to be cleaning the cartridge every other day.  When your filter is properly sized & chemically maintained, normal cleaning should be done about every 3 to 5 weeks.

The smaller EC 30 with the Power-flo pump system is sized just right for pools up to 18 ft. Round or about 7500 gallons.
