The trick to cartridge filters is to size them right the first time! Here's one time where "bigger is better".  Bigger meaning filter size, not horsepower.  The Hayward® X-Stream™ Cartridge Filter System with its 100 or 150 square feet of filter area & a 1.0 HP pump system is great for pools up to 20,000 gallons (typically a 21, 24, 27 or 30 round or 15x30 or 18x33 oval). 

Although the filter has the "capacity" to filter much more than that, you don't want to be cleaning the cartridge every other day.  When your filter is properly sized & the pool water is chemically maintained, normal cleaning (chemical, not just rinsing) should be done about every 3 to 5 weeks.
